Rev. William Harrison, Pastor

Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.

Psalms 2:8

  <===================================>

From the Pastor’s Desk:

Beloved:

To the Omnipotent, Omnipresence true and living GOD.  Once again Dear Heavenly Father, I call on you through our intercessor, your only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ on behalf of the Ministers, Officers and Members of Second Union Baptist Church.

Father as I pen this letter  in the fall of  October 2010, it is with intent of paying reverence to you and to thank you for the manifold blessings you have bestowed upon your servant and your sheep at this Branch of Zion.

Brothers and Sisters, I greet you with love and urge that you “Hold onto God’s Unchanging Hand.”  The Bible prophecies are being fulfilled everyday relative to this present generation “Livng in the Last Days.” While it is difficult for those who are living in darkness to understand this, the Bible says that darkness can’t comprehend light.  Therefore, those of us who are children of light should walk in the light as GOD has commanded. We are blessed and highly favored by GOD’s grace and mercy to still be on this side of the Jordan River. For if it were not for His Goodness, Grace and Mercy, it could have been the other way.

This statement is supported by reminding you, thus far  this year, seven members of our church have crossed over to the other side. The Great Apostle Paul reminds us that His Grace is sufficient for us, for our strength is made perfect in weakness. So we should always look to the hills from whence cometh our help and thank the true and living GOD for His manifold blessings.  We must be reminded not only to thank GOD for His blessings during good times but also during tough times. He allows us to go through so we will depend on Him for deliverance. After coming out of our wordly struggles we should honor Him through exaltation, devotion and service by becoming  stronger servants than before. Our souls must stay anchored in the Lord if we have hope for Eternity in GOD’s Kingdom.

The Bible reminds us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever. Therefore my beloved brethren and sisters we should always be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the works of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that our labour is not in vain in the Lord. He beseeches us to walk worthy of the vocation wherewith we are called.  With all lowliness, and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace. In order to do that we must keep our eyes, hearts and minds stayed on Jesus. We must separate ourselves from people of the world by coming out from among them to keep from perishing.  The Lord is not slack concerning His promise as men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. We are commanded in St. Matthew 28:19: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Finally, beloved, we pray that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob grant you peace until Jesus returns.

 Respectfully,

First Lady, Deaconess Judy F. Harrison and Reverend William Harrison Servant and Pastor

History of Veterans Day

Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11. However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated.[1] It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 12, 1919. The United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution seven years later on June 4, 1926, requesting the President issue another proclamation to observe November 11 with appropriate ceremonies. An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday; "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'."

In 1953, an Emporia, Kansas shoe store owner named Al King had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who served in World War I. King had been actively involved with the American War Dads during World War II. He began a campaign to turn Armistice Day into "All" Veterans Day. The Emporia Chamber of Commerce took up the cause after determining that 90% of Emporia merchants as well as the Board of Education supported closing their doors on November 11, 1953, to honor veterans. With the help of then-U.S. Rep. Ed Rees, also from Emporia, a bill for the holiday was pushed through Congress. President Dwight Eisenhower signed it into law on May 26, 1954.[3]

Congress amended this act on November 8, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with Veterans, and it has been known as Veterans Day since.[4][5]

Although originally scheduled for celebration on November 11 of every year, starting in 1971 in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. In 1978 it was moved back to its original celebration on November 11 (with the exceptions described above).

               Thanksgiving Day Tradition

Thanksgiving Day is a communal celebration marked as a sense of gratitude people feel for all the good things in life. This is done by offering prayers, gifting your near and dear ones. The fourth Thursday in the month of November is marked for the yearly celebration. The tradition of Thanksgiving continues till date in the form of

Family Reunion and Feasting

Family feast is an important tradition during Thanksgiving. The entire family sits at the table during dinner and offer prayer to the Lord Almighty for his continuous grace. It is also a time for relatives living in different places to come together and celebrate.

Tradition of Turkey

The traditional stuffed turkey adorns every dinner table during the feast. Pumpkin pie, Cranberry sauce, Corns are some of the dishes cooked everywhere to mark the day. Though historians don't have an evidence to prove that turkey was eaten during the first Thanksgiving dinner, but the thanksgiving celebration will be incomplete without it.

Parades

The traditional Thanksgiving parade probably started with President Lincoln proclaiming it an official day. The full- dress parade is a way to display the country's military strength and discipline. The main aim of such parades is to lift the spirits of the spectators, provide them with wholesome entertainment. In the present day, parades are accompanied with musical shows and celebrities.

Football Games

Watching NFL football during Thanksgiving is a popular tradition. The traditional game between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers continues. One of the most memorable games having been played on this day.

Psalm 136:26
"O give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever."

Psalm 30

"I will extol thee, O Lord, for thou hast drawn me up, and hast not let my foes rejoice over me. O Lord my God, I cried to thee for help, and thou hast healed me. O Lord, thou hast brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit.

Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.

As for me, I said in my prosperity, ‘I shall never be moved.’ By thy favor, O Lord, thou hadst established me as a strong mountain; thou didst hide thy face, I was dismayed.

To thee, O Lord, I cried; and to the Lord I made supplication; ‘What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the Pit? Will the dust praise thee? Will it tell of thy faithfulness? Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me! O Lord, be thou my helper!’

Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing; thou hast loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness, that my soul may praise thee and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to thee for ever."
